Message from the Principal
As I wrote in one of our earlier newsletters this year, we have switched our grading policy to reflect 70% of a student’s grade as Formative Assessments which are classwork, homework, and some quizzes. 30% of the grade comes from summative assessments, which are major assessments and some quizzes. This a flip from last year which was 70% summative and 30% formative. Teachers felt that the process of learning (formative) should weigh more than one or two assessments (summatives).
I also wanted to let you know that during the first quarter, teachers did not give grades lower than a 50%. As you know, a failing grade ranges from 0 to 69, and if a student gets a really low grade, let’s say from 0 to 30, it can bring their overall grade down to a point that is unrecoverable. We did this during the first quarter to help our students, especially our 6th grade students, understand middle school grading and to make sure they were not at a point at the end of quarter 1 that they could not get a yearly passing average.
With that being said, from this quarter on, the grade the student makes will be entered into the final grade and not replaced with a 50%.
Students will know this, and we ask parents to remind them that whether they make a 30% or 42% on an assignment it will remain that grade. Teachers do give students chances to complete missing assignments and to retake assessments once remediation is completed. Students must follow the teacher’s guidelines for these since each teacher has different requirements for remediation.
Again, the best thing you can do is to monitor your child’s grades and to make sure they are turning their work in on time.
